Liverpool linked wonderkid Gustavo Maia is set to join Barcelona with his agent claiming that the La Liga giants are on the verge of a deal, speaking to Radio Transamerica.

With Jurgen Klopp’s Reds looking to ensure the future is as bright as the present at Anfield, Liverpool have made it their mission to bring some of the most exciting young talents in world football to Merseyside.

But, despite their much-discussed interest (Marca), it seems that the European champions are set to fall by the wayside with Maia packing his bags for Spain instead.

“We are sure Barcelona will complete the purchase,” agent Danilo Silva says in quotes reported by Globo Esporte.

“There was already a signal from the club and Maia has started private Spanish lessons to get more prepared.

“Other clubs came to us in the last few months. But he never had any doubt, he always wanted Barcelona.”

In truth, Liverpool were always up against it in their pursuit of a South American gem. As reported by Marca, Barcelona had a deal in place to sign Maia this month – as long as they committed themselves to paying Sao Paulo around £3 million before June 30.

And if he can replicate the impact Rodrygo Goes and Vinicius Jr have made at another Spanish giant, Maia could be the best £3 million Barcelona will ever spend.
