Alvaro Morata was attracting Tottenham Hotspur’s attention while he was with Juventus.
Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata celebrates scoring
Alvaro Morata has suggested to the Guardian that Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino was one of the managers he spoke to about a potential move while his future was up in the air at Juventus.
Morata is arguably one of the most talented strikers in Europe currently, and has understandably attracted plenty of attention having already played for Real Madrid and the Old Lady during his fairly brief career.
And while Morata confirmed that he was aware that Real Madrid planned to exercise their buy-back clause which allowed them to re-sign the Spaniard for £23 million two years after his move to Turin (via BBC Sport), he suggested that there was still a lack of clarity on where his future would be, prompting several calls from England, including one from the Spurs boss.
“Various Premier League coaches called to tell me to play for them. I said yeah, I’d like to, that if I had to leave I would almost certainly go to London, but that I didn’t know what Madrid would do,” he told the Guardian.
“I knew they’d bring me back but I didn’t know if it was to keep me or sell me. I spoke directly to Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte, although the norm is clubs call my dad or agent. Madrid said they didn’t want to sell, so here I am.”

While Harry Kane has been in sensational form once again this season, there have been occasions where Tottenham’s lack of depth up front has been somewhat exposed and having another ruthless finisher would have been ideal for Pochettino.
It may have been somewhat difficult to convince Morata to head to Tottenham had he been available following his return to the Bernabeu, but pulling off a deal of that magnitude would have sent a major statement of intent, and may have perhaps been that bit extra that Spurs needed to still be in title contention at this stage of the season.
