Fabrizio Romano has confirmed to the Here We Go podcast that clubs are already in contact with RB Leipzig over signing reported Liverpool target Dayot Upamecano.

With Virgil van Dijk out injured, it has now been suggested that Liverpool could well make a bid for the £40 million-rated centre-back (Sunday World).

The Sunday World claimed three weeks ago that Leipzig are expecting the Reds to make a bid for their star defender in the near future.

But Romano doesn’t think that Upamecano will leave Leipzig in January.

Instead, he feels that the French defender may wait until next summer before making the switch.

“I don’t think Upamecano will be sold in January,” Romano said.

“At the moment he is at the perfect club. But maybe next summer he can be one of the hottest properties. Some clubs are already speaking with RB Leipzig.”

Whether Liverpool are one of the clubs supposedly talking with Leipzig remains to be seen, but many Reds fans may be hoping that they are.

Liverpool have been hit hard with injuries this term and with Joe Gomez and Van Dijk out their options now looks seriously short.

If they could bring in a player of Upamecano’s quality in the new year then their chances of winning the league would surely be greatly increased.

However, if Romano is correct, it seems that Liverpool could face a battle to convince both player and club if they are to make a move any time soon.
