Liverpool have just signed up an unsung hero of the club’s academy to a new contract.

The Reds have announced that Oakley Cannonier has put pen to paper on a first professional deal on Merseyside.

The 17-year-old attacker, who joined Liverpool from Leeds United at Under-12 level, is now a professional footballer.

But fans of the Anfield club have known about him for much longer – and not strictly because of his talent.

When Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Barcelona in the Champions League two years ago, en route to winning their sixth European Cup, the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold – whose quick corner led to the decisive goal – and Divock Origi were heralded.

But it was then-ball boy Cannonier who quickly handed the ball to Alexander-Arnold on that memorable night in Liverpool.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the announcement on Twitter this afternoon:

Cannonier is already an established member of Liverpool’s Under-18 side and scored a number of goals under Marc Bridge-Wilkinson last term.

But next, the teen will be aiming to break into the Reds’ Under-23 outfit, with the overall goal obviously being a senior debut.
