The former Sunderland loanee now has a Premier League title to his name.

Chelsea won the Premier League title yesterday, with a goal from Michy Batshuayi enough to earn them a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion. The result saw Antonio Conte’s side claim a Premier League title not many expected they would, playing an exciting new brand of football which saw the Italian playing with wing-backs in a 3-4-3 system.

That meant they needed a left wing-back in the summer and Fiorentina star Marcos Alonso was signed for a fee reported by Sky Sports to be in the region of £24 million.

Sunderland fans were certainly surprised by the move.

Alonso joined Sunderland on loan from Fiorentina in 2014 and played an important role in their survival in the Premier League.

After 20 appearances for the club they had an option to buy Alonso outright from La Viola. Sunderland, according to the Chronicle.

But the deal became protracted and an offer of £2 million plus Modibo Diakite did little to stir up Fiorentina’s will to sell.

Fiorentina kept hold of the player, who Goal report could have been Sunderland’s for just £5 million, and reaped the rewards with his lucrative sale to Chelsea.

Now he has gone on to win a Premier League title fans at Sunderland continue to rub their eyes, but many were very pleased to see the Spaniard win the league as they suffer relegation to the Championship…
