Ally McCoist has played down the idea of Ange Postecoglou leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Liverpool at the end of the season.
With Jurgen Klopp set to leave in May, Liverpool are now planning ahead and looking for his long-term successor.
Whilst Xabi Alonso leads the line, other names that have been thrown into the ring include Ange Postecoglou of Tottenham.
But Ally McCoist doesn’t think the former Celtic manager should take that post because he ‘doesn’t think the timing would be right’, as he told talkSPORT (14/02/24 at 7:55 am).
The former Rangers man also added that, whoever does replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, will have a ‘very, very difficult act to follow’.
The work the German has done on Merseyside is legendary in the eyes of the Liverpool supporters and he will forever be remembered as the one who delivered the title after 30 years of heartache.
Unlike Manchester City, who have spent silly money under Pep Guardiola, his rival has done it under a much stricter budget.
That’s another reason why the next man through the doors will have a challenge on his hands, with Ally McCoist speaking about Ange Postecoglou’s popularity at Spurs after joining them in the summer.
Ange Postecoglou to replace Jurgen Klopp?
“Timing is everything and I don’t think the timing would be right,” said McCoist. “People will say ‘you might not get another opportunity to go to Liverpool’.
“We all love him. The vast majority of people are really enjoying the work he is doing at Tottenham. They are in pole position, after Brennan Johnson’s late winner at the weekend, to get Champions League football with fourth place. I actually think they will probably do that.
“I think he has got people on the edge of their seats. He said ‘that’s the way we are’. We will win games in the last minute and we will probably lose games in the last minute. I just think he is great. He interviews really, really well. He has got a real bond with the Tottenham supporters.
“It’s the old Sir Alex syndrome at Manchester United, to a certain degree. I’m not saying Jurgen Klopp has had the same success at Liverpool as Sir Alex had at Manchester United. It’s maybe not ideal to fill those shoes. Jurgen Klopp will be a very, very difficult act to follow., especially with the results and performances and the relationship he has with the supporters.”
Ange Postecoglou’s style of play
There is no doubt that the Australian ticks the box of style of play, if Liverpool were to look at him or wanted to appoint him.
He is aggressive in his methods, it’s his way or the highway and the forward players get all the joy and freedom in the world to express themselves.
Plus, his fullbacks play more like number 10s and that’s something Trent Alexander-Arnold would certainly enjoy because he is perhaps the best attack-minded fullback in the world.
But just overall, even though Postecoglou lost a figurehead like Harry Kane in the summer, he is still managing to produce perhaps the most entertaining style of play in the Premier League at Hotspur Way.
