Ally McCoist believes Tottenham Hotspur should have brought Harry Redknapp back to the club until the end of the season.

McCoist was speaking to talkSPORT this morning having witnessed Tottenham’s stunning collapse at Newcastle United.

Spurs were 5-0 down inside just 21 minutes at St James’ Park and ended up losing 6-1.

Cristian Stellini’s position as interim boss is now in doubt with Tottenham seemingly lurching from one disaster to another.

Ryan Mason may well be the favourite to take over should Stellini go, but McCoist has another idea.

The Scot suggested that Tottenham would have been wise to bring in Harry Redknapp as their interim boss, viewing him as ideal for their current situation.

McCoist believes bringing in Redknapp – some 11 years since his Spurs exit – would be ‘actually a good idea’.

McCoist highlighted that Redknapp knows Tottenham inside out and would bring some stability at least until a long-term manager comes in.

“I always want to give managers the biggest opportunity possible… but come on, something’s got to be done,” said McCoist. “I know it sounds crazy but if you can’t get the man that you want, you’re going to have get another caretaker. I know it’s not ideal but the whole situation has become farcical. I’ve got unbelievable sympathy for the Tottenham supporters, has there ever been a club that underachieves and doesn’t win the things it should?”

“I actually think Harry wouldn’t have been a bad idea. Actually a good idea, he knows the club, knows the players. They just want a level of consistency and performance, the top four is away. They aren’t catching [Manchester] United or Newcastle. Long-term, I don’t know. Are they going to go for Vincent Kompany, are they going to go for [Mauricio] Pochettino? But something has to be done. That yesterday, five-nothing down after 20 minutes. Dear me,” he added.

Harry Redknapp would love the Tottenham job

The Stellini experiment has been a disaster so far.

Just why Tottenham decided to part ways with Antonio Conte but then handed the job to his assistant is anyone’s guess.

Tottenham look the same as they did in the final stages under Conte, possibly even worse.

Stellini may well go this week but it’s more likely that Tottenham will put Ryan Mason in charge than go for Redknapp.

The 76-year-old is still putting himself forward for the job though having spoken about Spurs today.

The Englishman said on talkSPORT (8:39am, April 24, 2023) that he would love a return to Tottenham if Daniel Levy came calling.

Redknapp became Spurs boss back in 2008 and did a great job at Tottenham before being replaced in 2012.

Redknapp hasn’t been in management now since 2017 and was sacked by Birmingham City in September of that year.

It’s hard to see Tottenham going for Redknapp after more than five years out of management, but you can hardly blame him for putting his name out there.
