Rangers legend Ally McCoist spoke to reporters about his former side’s Old Firm Derby defeat to Celtic on Sunday, and shared the most telling factor about the Gers’ 1-0 loss to the Hoops, as quoted by the Daily Star.

Steven Gerrard’s side were outclassed by Brendan Rodgers’ men from the very first whistle until the last at Parkhead, and had it not been for Allan McGregor, the score-line would have been far more one-sided than just 1-0.

Rangers have undoubtedly improved under Gerrard, but Sunday’s defeat to Celtic served as evidence of just how much more work needs to be done at Ibrox.

And McCoist highlighted how things could have been even worse for the Gers on Sunday, had McGregor not been on tip-top form, as quoted by the Daily Star:

Manager Ally McCoist of Rangers celebrates following his team's victory over Berwick Rangers at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2013 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Rangers goalkeeper gave a man-of-the-match performance, so that tells you all you need to know about the game. But for Allan McGregor, who I thought was excellent, it could have been more than one. But taking a step back there has definitely – definitely – progress made from Rangers, with the European side of things very encouraging.”

Next up for Rangers is a home game against Dundee on September 15th, whilst Celtic face a trip to St Mirren the day before.
