Ally McCoist is urging Timo Werner to prove him wrong ahead of his expected loan move to Tottenham Hotspur from RB Leipzig.
Sources have told HITC Football that Timo Werner underwent a medical at Tottenham on Sunday and he will sign a deal until the end of the season with the London club.
The former Chelsea player returns to familiar ground after his ill-fated spell at Stamford Bridge where he scored only ten goals in all competitions.
With Son Heung-min away on international duty with South Korea, Ally McCoit thinks Timo Werner is being brought in as a ‘stop-gap’, as he told talkSPORT (08/01/24 at 6:40 am).
But he thinks there is ‘no way’ the 27-year-old can match the goalscoring record of Tottenham’s captain.
After a drop in form last season where he only scored ten Premier League goals, Son Heung-min is now back to his old self and he has 12 goals and five assists from 20 league matches.
Only the best of the best in the Premier League would be able to match such a record, so it’s no bother if Timo Werner can’t cover his goals.

“I think he has a better chance of doing a job for Spurs,” said McCoist. “Listen, his stats will tell you that he isn’t going to get the goals Son gets.
“The best thing that could happen for Spurs is that Son gets back as quickly as possible. Clearly, you can understand what they are trying to do. Richarlison playing down the middle and they need someone to play in that position that Son has vacated.
“Werner is one of these guys, he will work his side and there will be no lack of effort. Still pacy. He certainly won’t get you the goals Son will get you. He might prove me wrong. Stop-gap. He will come with something to prove and give you everything he has got.
“No way a full-time replacement for Son. But you can see what they are trying to do. His goalscoring record is poor and even when he has gone back to Germany.”
Can Timo Werner prove people wrong?
The fact that Werner arrives with a point to prove might just help his cause and allow him to have a much better time in the Premier League than he previously did.
It needs to be noted that this is an initial loan deal, with an option to buy at the end of the season.
There isn’t a massive transfer fee on his head, like there was last time out, so that certainly helps matters.
And, let’s be honest, many are viewing this deal in a negative light, so if Werner does anything good, then it will be rightfully exaggerated by the Spurs fans.
