Former Rangers striker and manager Ally McCoist has told BBC Radio 5 Live that he was impressed with Scott Brown’s performance for Celtic in their weekend win.

Brown started as captain as Celtic recorded an impressive 5-1 win over their rivals, putting rival Joey Barton in the shade.

The 31-year-old’s display drew praise from McCoist, who credited new Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers for his improvement.

He said, speaking to the station on Monday night: “Scott Brown was not playing to his full potential at the end of last season, at the weekend he was immense.”

McCoist went on to discuss Celtic’s upcoming Champions League game against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

He said: “Brendan [Rodgers] will have a shape and formation to stop Barcelona, and if possible to try and nick something. It’s a massive ask for them but what a pleasure, its what every player wants to do.”

Celtic will of course have plenty of trepidation ahead of the tie, but the weekend win over Mark Warburton’s Rangers will give them a huge confidence boost.

It will not just be the victory which does this, but the manner of it, the comprehensive four goal margin which dispirited their opponents, and Celtic will be keen to try and ensure they are not on the wrong end of a similar beating this week.
