Arsenal are expected to be in the market for a striker in the January transfer window and Ally McCoist told TalkSPORT on Wednesday morning (9.15AM) that signing Cristiano Ronaldo on a short-term basis would “tick a couple of boxes”.
Ronaldo, 37, remains the centre of a media frenzy – as he has done for the past few months. His interview with the controversial TV presenter Piers Morgan convinced Manchester United to terminate his deal. It was expiring in June.
It means that Ronaldo has gone to the World Cup as the tournament’s only free agent. Only the third player to do so in history. There are strong links to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, but nothing has been made official as things stand.
On Tuesday evening, he was dropped from the starting line-up for Portugal. That is, after causing a fuss at being taken off against South Korea in the previous game. His replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 win.
Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus has undergone surgery on a knee injury and it is believed he might be out for a few months. Arsenal need a striker and McCoist discussed whether Arsenal should sign Ronaldo: “It would tick a couple of boxes”.

McCoist says Arsenal signing Ronaldo would tick a couple of boxes
Laura Woods, a well-known Arsenal supporter and disagrees. She said it would be a good move for Ronaldo – but not for Arsenal. She questioned why Arsenal would sign him, given Mikel Arteta has got rid of bad eggs in the recent past.
Woods makes a good point. Arteta offloaded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang because of his attitude. Why would Arsenal bring such a controversial character such as Ronaldo to the club – when Arteta has worked so hard to mould his squad.
On paper, Arsenal need a striker to replace Jesus in the short term and Ronaldo needs a club. He will want to win trophies and the Gunners sit first in the League. But it would be a mistake on Arsenal’s part to sign Ronaldo on a free.
