Ally McCoist reacts to Celtic getting knocked out of the Champions League

Neil Lennon’s Celtic will not be competing in the Champions League this season, as they will now be looking to qualify for the Europa League.

TalkSport pundit Ally McCoist couldn’t help but enjoy Celtic being knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday, as he questioned Neil Lennon’s team selection.

The former Scotland striker sent a reminder regarding Brendan Rodgers by stating he tried playing Callum McGregor at left-back when he was the manager – McCoist made it clear that it didn’t work back then, and once again, it didn’t work earlier in the week under Lennon.

Celtic ended up conceding four goals in front of their own supporters as CFR Cluj ran out deserved winners on a disappointing night for the Scottish Club.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSport (15/08/2019 at 6:10 am), McCoist shared his thoughts on Celtic getting knocked out, as he couldn’t help but poke fun at their recent result.

“That’s where you lost it,” McCoist told Alan Brazil. “Celtic, at home, generally speaking, if they score three goals its enough. But for Celtic to concede four in a Europen tie. I always knew it was going to be a tough tie. They are a good side.

“I don’t go along with these rankings, they are sitting 280 or whatever it was behind Dundalk. It doesn’t work like that. But that being said, when they went 2-1 and 3-2 ahead, I thought they would see it out. To lose four goals at home, I would have to say that is deeply concerning.

“Obviously, his team selection is being questioned, as well. McGregor at left-back. Not for me. I don’t know whether he is trying to accommodate Ntcham and get Christie into the side. Brendan did it and it didn’t work.”

From Celtic’s perspective, attention will now turn to another cup competition – the Scottish League Cup – before they aim to qualify for the Europa League next Thursday.

The Bhoys have been pitted against Swedish side AIK – the first leg will take place at Parkhead before the duo meet for the reverse fixture in Sweden.
