The Rangers legend Ally McCoist has expressed his belief that Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths is and remains Scotland’s biggest goal threat.

Griffiths is back in the Scotland team for the first time in more than two years as Steve Clarke’s side attempt to overcome Serbia later and qualify for next summer’s European Championship.

The intervening period has been a difficult one for Celtic striker.

But his career is once again showing signs of life, with Griffiths having scored three goals in five games for Celtic this season.

McCoist and Alan Brazil both know what it’s like to be a Scotland striker and despite their conflicting allegiances – McCoist being of a Rangers and Brazil a Celtic persuasion – the pair were in agreement over Griffiths earlier.

“I think he’s our man. Natural finisher.” McCoist told Talksport. “Yeah, I would think so [that Griffiths is Scotland’s best hope of scoring].

“He’s received a bit of criticism as you know, I think a lot of it justified. That said, I have gone on record as saying if we do need a goal with 15/20 minutes to go, he’s possibly our best shot of a goal because I still think he’s probably the best finisher in the squad.

“So, I would not rule that out and it would certainly be a happy ending for Leigh Griffiths and all of us.”

Griffiths has scored four goals in 19 games for Scotland.

He could line up alongside his Celtic teammates Greg Taylor, Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor, and Rangers’ Jon McLaughlin and Ryan Jack, in Belgrade later.
