Ibrox legend Ally McCoist singles out a Rangers man for slight criticism.

Ally McCoist has picked one criticism about Rangers right-back James Tavernier, speaking to Ladbrokes.

Signed by Rangers boss Mark Warburton in 2015, the 25-year-old played a huge role in helping the Gers win promotion to the Premiership last season.

The former Wigan Athletic full-back grabbed 10 goals and 17 assists in the Scottish Championship last term and it’s almost unheard of for a defender to be that productive in the final third of the pitch.

But the Rangers man has struggled with the step up in class in the top flight, as a lot of his team-mates have as well to be fair, and has only scored once and set up one in individual stats which illustrate the gulf in class between both divisions.

That is made worse by the fact that he has played in a more advanced role in recent weeks, with Lee Hodson taking his spot at right-back, and Ibrox icon McCoist agrees that the English defender has been very inconsistent.

When it was put to him that Tavernier has “gone missing” this season, McCoist responded to Ladbrokes: “He has. He has. The other wee fella has come in and done well at right-back.

“Tavernier has been terrific since he’s come in and chipped in an unbelievable amount of goals. I think we’ve got to cut him a little bit of slack.”

Warburton’s side host Old Firm rivals Celtic at Ibrox on December 31 though, being honest, the Hoops are 14 points clear of Rangers at the moment. Even a win is unlikely to do much in regards to the Premiership title race.
