McCoist feels Newcastle ace Callum Wilson better for Man Utd than Matheus Cunha
Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid to bolster Erik ten Hag’s frontline. But Ally McCoist has told talkSPORT that Newcastle United star Callum Wilson or Brentford ace Ivan Toney would be better options for the Red Devils.

Ten Hag is determined to add another centre-forward to his ranks at Old Trafford after the Dutchman began his reign as a Premier League coach with successive defeats. Manchester United also sit bottom of the table after defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Reports by ESPN note Cunha is now Manchester United’s top striker target after compiling a shortlist for Ten Hag. And talkSPORT add the Red Devils are closing in on a £42m deal for the Atletico Madrid forward, who only joined the La Liga side from Hertha Berlin last year.
Diego Simeone paid the Bundesliga club €25m (£21m) with a further (£5m) in add-ons. But has so far only been able to get seven goals and seven assists from the 23-year-old across all competitions. Cunha also made his Brazil debut in September and is now on seven caps.
Callum Wilson outscored Matheus Cunha despite injury-hit 2021/22 campaign
Yet McCoist feels that instead of targeting Cunha, Manchester United should be looking to sign a striker proven in the Premier League, like Wilson of Newcastle or Brentford’s Toney. Wilson struck eight goals in 18 top-flight games last term, while Toney hit 12 in 33 fixtures.
“There is a massive amount of quality around the league,” McCoist declared. “Ivan Toney is certainly one of them. Another that I like – I know he’s had his injuries – but it is Callum Wilson up at Newcastle. I think he’s different class.”

Wilson only enjoyed 18 Premier League outings in 2021/22 after missing four games with a thigh injury and 16 with a calf issue. The 30-year-old, who cost £20m in 2020, started their two matches so far this season, and scored against Nottingham Forest on the opening day.
Toney, meanwhile, hit home 12 and created five goals last season after starting in 32 of his 33 top-flight outings. The 26-year-old had only played 10 top-flight minutes in his career in previous seasons, and already has one goal and two assists from two games this campaign.
