Ally McCoist has claimed that Steven Gerrard has a ‘better chance’ of landing the Liverpool job by staying at Rangers than leaving for Aston Villa, as he told talkSPORT (09/11/21 at 6:30 am).
The Rangers legend questioned how Gerrard leaving Villa is ‘such a big opportunity’ and thinks the Scottish side are a ‘bigger club’ than the Midlands outfit.
After Villa sacked Dean Smith on Sunday, they are now on the lookout for a new face to take to their dugout.
With Gerrard winning the Premiership title last season, and with it ending Celtic’s dominance, his name has been put up in lights and attracted the attention of those in England.
Villa have seemingly discussed securing the managerial talents of the legendary midfielder, as reported by the Daily Record.
But McCoist wasn’t having any of it when it was put to him that Gerrard could get the chance to manage in the Premier League, manage a big club and take up a big opportunity at Villa.
“How is it such a big opportunity?” asked McCoist. “You got most of it right, you are trying to tell me that Aston Villa are a bigger club than Rangers?
“That’s correct (Aston Villa being previous European Cup winners). Of course, he should (stay at Rangers) because he wants the Liverpool job.
“What if he goes to Aston Villa and it doesn’t work out? He has a better chance at Rangers, than he has at Aston Villa, if he wants the Liverpool job.
“So, he goes to Aston Villa and it doesn’t work out, then he’s not getting the Liverpool job. If he stays at Rangers, won the league last year, retain the league, straight into the Champions League, it’s a great success and he has a better chance of the Liverpool job.”

The key thing here is that Aston Villa’s Chief Executive is a man Gerrard knows very well.
Christian Purslow was in Liverpool’s boardroom where Gerrard was firing in goals from long-range at Anfield.
Therefore, it’s understandable that he would be drawn towards Gerrard, it’s just a case of how he will react if Villa knocked on his door?
Many have stated that, one day, they see Gerrard becoming Liverpool manager, but in truth, he has to earn those stripes.
At this moment in time, he is on the right track, but he is nowhere near landing that gig, so perhaps taking up a Premier League job would land him closer to that ultimate prize.
