Celtic and Rangers will be aiming to lift the Scottish Premiership title when they return from their mid-season break.

Ally McCoist believes Celtic have gone ‘the opposite way’ to Rangers during the January transfer window by signing ‘potential’, whereas their rivals have gone for the ‘tried and trusted’.

Prior to the winter break, Steven Gerrard’s side inflicted a game-changing 1-0 win over their Old Firm rivals to move level on points with the league leaders and blow the title race wide open.

During the mid-season break, both Rangers and Celtic have made huge strides in the transfer market, with the former signing the likes of Jermain Defoe and the latter adding youngster Olivier Burke to their squad.

Former Scotland striker McCoist offered his thoughts on the Glasgow duo’s January additions as he thinks it has made the title race ‘interesting’.

“The Rangers signings have been tried and tested,” McCoist told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on talkSPORT on 10/01/2019 at 7:10 am. “You are looking at it, Defoe and Davies, tried and tested.

“I think Rangers have made two good signings. Celtic have gone the opposite way. I think they have gone with potential, with Weah and Olivier Burke. I definitely think it is going to be interesting (the title race).”

Four days ago, Rangers confirmed on their official website that Defoe had put pen-to-paper on an 18-month loan deal following his move from Premier League side Bournemouth.

On the same day, the Gers announced that midfielder Steven Davis had re-joined the club from Southampton as he has penned down a six-month loan deal.

The other notable signings from the other side of Glasgow were West Brom winger Burke, and PSG forward Timothy Weah joining Brendan Rodgers side, as reported by The Times.
