Rangers brought 15 new signings to Ibrox this summer.

Manager Ally McCoist of Rangers celebrates following his team's victory over Berwick Rangers at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2013 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Rangers striker and manager Ally McCoist has told The Scottish Sun that he feels Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty are both lucky to be back at Ibrox.

The Gers lost for the first time under Steven Gerrard, as Olivier Ntcham’s goal handed Celtic all three points in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

That shouldn’t take anything away from Gerrard’s fine start to the season, as he had gone 12 competitive games unbeaten before Sunday’s defeat at Parkhead.

Gerrard has been backed with a whopping 15 signings this summer, with the final of those coming on Monday with a deal for free agent defender Gareth McAuley.

Two of Gerrard’s 15 signings have already played for Rangers, as he decided to bring goalkeeper Allan McGregor and striker Kyle Lafferty back to Ibrox, six years after their controversial departures.

When Rangers are liquidated and demoted, players had the option to transfer their contracts to the ‘new’ Rangers or leave as free agents – and both McGregor and Lafferty chose the latter.

Fans were far from impressed with any player who moved on in that fashion, but have at least welcomed McGregor and Lafferty back with open arms after their returns this summer.

Now, Ally McCoist – who was Rangers boss at the time of their exits – has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks both players are ‘lucky’ to be back at Ibrox after their controversial exits, noting that McGregor was really torn about his 2012 decision, whilst claiming that the duo will really appreciate being given another chance with Rangers.

“Listen, a lot of the boys had decisions to make, not easy decisions but I can tell you right now I know McGregor was torn, 100 per cent he was torn,” said McCoist. “The thing about McGregor now is he’ll be rubbing his hands and thinking he’s the luckiest man in the world, as will Lafferty — they’re two lucky, lucky players to be back at the club where they had a lot of success.”

“I think the two boys will appreciate it and they will make the most of every opportunity they have now,” he added.
