Ally McCoist has claimed that Hugo Lloris would not have started for Tottenham had they not been moving into the new stadium on Wednesday night.

The North London club recorded a historic 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in front of just under 60,000 supporters, with goalkeeper Lloris helping his side secure a clean sheet.

Prior to their opening game at their new stadium against Palace, Lloris had made a costly mistake during his their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool three days earlier.

Speaking to Kick Off on talkSPORT (03/04/2019 at 08:50 pm), former Rangers striker McCoist made a ‘crazy’ claim that if this was an ordinary match then Lloris would not have started in between the sticks.

“Pochettino is a very sensible man and a great coach,” McCoist told talkSPORT. “Surprisingly, now here’s a statement for you, I think if Spurs hadn’t been playing at their new stadium tonight, Lloris might not have started in goals.

“Now, that’s crazy and people will be saying, ‘what are you talking about?’ But I just think that the whole occasion, it’s a massive, massive night for Lloris as it is for his teammates. And had he not featured here tonight, it could have seriously affected him mentally in terms of his confidence.”

There is no doubt that Lloris has been coming under fire this season for his performances and the costly mistakes he has been producing.

From his poor shot-stopping to his decision-making, it has a led to a number of pundits and fans alike questioning just how good the 2018 World Cup winner really is.

Truthfully, the France international can only be judged on his previous match and against Palace, he produced the goods and secured a valuable clean sheet.

He will seemingly remain in between the sticks for Tottenham and will be focusing his attention on their Champions League first-leg knockout encounter against Manchester City next Tuesday.
