Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have stuttered in the absence of Alfredo Morelos.
Ally McCoist has suggested to BT Sport that Alfredo Morelos is mostly to blame for Rangers’ recent slump.
Steven Gerrard’s side were held to a 0-0 stalemate with St Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday for what represented the Gers’ second successive goalless draw.
The red-hot Rangers hitman was suspended for both games after his red card away to Aberdeen a little earlier this month.
The fiery Colombian star still has one more game to go on his ban following the silly dismissal at Pittodrie, and McCoist believes that Morelos, who has over 20 goals for Gerrard’s side in all competitions this season, is the prime culprit for this downturn.
“It’s difficult to argue, really,” McCoist told BT Sport.
“Also, you have to say the flip side of the coin. He’s the main reason Rangers have been successful to an extent this season, he’s also the reason they’re not doing better because sitting in the stand is absolutely no good to him.
“It’s a little bit of a contradiction. We spoke about him before – he’s without doubt one of the most talented players in the league but he has a problem with discipline.”
McCoist is right. As legendary as Jermain Defoe is, Morelos, who is 14 years younger, is significantly sharper than the English marksman and that has shown in recent weeks.
They need him back as soon as possible. He might be brilliant, but the former HJK Helsinki star, who now has four red cards under his belt this season, is also petulant and it’s harming the light Blues, whose draw with Saints this past weekend enabled Celtic to move eight points clear of them in the Premiership title race.
Rangers host Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday in Morelos’s last game of the three-match suspension.
