Ally McCoist backs Michael O’Neill for Sunderland

Sunderland are currently looking for a replacement for Simon Grayson.

Ally McCoist has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 16th November, that he believes Michael O’Neill would be wise to take the Sunderland job.

O’Neill has been talked up as a potential candidate to takeover from Simon Grayson at the Stadium of Light, after impressing in charge of Northern Ireland.

O’Neill took Northern Ireland to Euro 2016, and almost helped them qualify for the World Cup next summer.

However, Northern Ireland’s failure to beat Switzerland in a World Cup play off means that O’Neill’s future is now being speculated about.

Sunderland are said to be keen to bring in the 48-year-old, as they feel he could help them get out of trouble in the Championship.

And McCoist believes that the job could be a good one for O’Neill to take.

“The fact of the matter is, that if Michael is going to get a club job, then it’s going to be in a club where there’s problems,” McCoist, who has also been linked with the Black Cats job, said.

“Sunderland’s a fantastic club and I think it would be a great job to get. There’s only one way they could go, I would hope.”

Sunderland are currently sat at rock bottom of the Championship table, after winning just one league match all season.

At the moment Robbie Stockdale is in temporary charge, with Martin Bain taking a long time to decide upon Grayson’s successor.
