QPR forward Paul Smyth has been linked with a move to Portsmouth

Queens Park Rangers forward Paul Smyth could be about to join League One Portsmouth on loan, according to West London Sport.

Manager Steve McClaren is reportedly set to allow the 20-year-old to leave Loftus Road on a temporary basis and the south coast side lead the way.

Although Smyth has struggled for game time so far this season, it appears a bold move from McClaren given that Ryan Manning and David Wheeler have gone out on loan already.

QPR have strengthened their attack with the signings Tomer Hemed and Nahki Wells but Smyth’s potential absence could prove a mistake.

The Northern Ireland international made a positive impression under Ian Holloway and instead of nurture Smyth’s talents, McClaren appears happy to let him gain a better understanding of the game elsewhere.

Granted, a loan move will do Smyth the world of good but his presence in the QPR squad would be required throughout the course of the season.

The R’s often struggle with injuries at any one time and as positive it would be to see Smyth making a name for himself at Pompey or elsewhere, McClaren must not weaken his attacking threat too much.

Only time will tell if Smyth leaves but QPR fans will give any potential move their blessing, but hope it doesn’t affect their own league position come the end of the season.
