Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen has told BBC Sport that Chris Coleman is the right man to turn new club Sunderland around after a nightmare start to the 2017-18 campaign.

Coleman, who managed former Liverpool Allen at national team level with Wales, has suffered two defeats in his first three games after taking over as manager from Simon Grayson with the club in the relegation zone.

Earning just Sunderland’s second league win of the season against Burton Albion last month, Coleman has suffered defeats to Aston Villa and Reading as the Wearside outfit remain in 23rd place in the Championship table.

However, 27-year-old Allen believes Coleman will turn the Black Cats around and have them firing in no time, but spoke his sadness to see the former Real Sociedad and Fulham boss leave his post as Wales manager.

“We all wish him the best of luck at Sunderland and I think if anyone can turn that club around and steer them in the right direction he’s the man to do that,” Allen said.

“It’s sad to see him move on. It hardly ever happens that all the players are disappointed to see a manager move on, that says everything you need to know about the job he’s done.

“It was a shock and a huge disappointment, he’s done an incredible job and had great success.”

Coleman took Allen and Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, where they were eventually beaten by the tournament winners Portugal in France. However, Coleman could not mastermind qualification for the 2018 World Cup.

Sunderland now face a daunting trip to the Molineux Stadium to face Championship league leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday in what is likely to be a comfortable clash for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
