The Premier League is the most likely destination for Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Iago Herrerin, AS reports of the Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Everton target.
It is public knowledge in Spain that the long-serving goalkeeper has played his final game for the Basque giants after 15 long years at the San Mames.
The divorce is at least an amicable one, with both club and player in agreement that the time is right to say goodbye.
“He wants a new destination and that is why we hope something will soon be agreed for him to be able to leave Athletic,” head coach Gaizka Garitano told El Desmarque earlier in the summer.
Herrerin has since been left out of Athletic’s squad for the first two La Liga fixtures of the new campaign as the 32-year-old mulls over his next move.
AS claims that there is interest from Turkey, specifically a Galatasaray side desperate to reclaim their title after a humiliating mid-table finish last term.
England remains the most likely destination as things stand, however, with Athletic open to terminating the final year of Herrerin’s contract and allowing him to leave for free.
Talk about a goodwill gesture.
West Ham and Everton are also interested, via Deia and Marca in August.
But, if Herrerin wants regular first-team football after losing his place to the exceptional Unai Simon at Athletic, you have to ask whether the Premier League really is the right move for him?
West Ham have Lukasz Fabianski, Darren Randolph and David Martin to choose from while, at Crystal Palace, Vicente Guaita has enjoyed an inspired start to the season.
Jordan Pickford has shown signs of his 2018 form for Everton of late too, although there is a lack of obvious cover for the England number one.
