The Everton winger has been linked with a move to Newcastle United this month.
Toffees boss Sam Allardyce spoke to the media today, ahead of his side’s clash with West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League tomorrow, and responded to a question asking whether he will sanction Aaron Lennon’s exit from the club this month, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
The 30-year-old has played a peripheral role in Everton’s campaign so far this season, making just nine Premier League starts, and ESPN reported yesterday that Rafa Benitez wants to bring the winger to Newcastle.
Allardyce has already brought Theo Walcott and Cenk Tosun to Goodison Park this month, and Lennon will surely fall even further down the pecking order.
Allardyce, who took over the Blues at the end of November, addressed the media today, and responded when asked if Lennon will leave Everton this month, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo:
“I don’t know. That lies in the hands of the chairman and Steve (Walsh) the director of football. They handle all that side of it, those negotiations if and when they go on.”
The Toffees currently sit in ninth spot in the Premier League table, and Allardyce will be hoping that his side can mount a sustained push for the Europa League spots during the final third of their campaign.
The 63-year-old admitted that he will not be signing any more players to aid them in their quest for a top seven finish, however, and he will instead be focusing on trimming down the size of his squad.
And perhaps that in itslef is a hint that Lennon could be heading for the exit door this month.
