Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Sam Allardyce has been discussing Everton’s chances of staying up and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Make no mistake about it at all. Everton are in a relegation battle, and if they don’t start winning games, they’ll be playing Championship football next season.
Luckily, they have a new manager in the shape of Sean Dyche, and he’s going to try his very best to turn the club’s fortunes around.
According to Allardyce, the key to Everton improving their form is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Allardyce says that the Toffees will start winning games if Dyche can get the England striker in the right frame of mind.
DCL is the key
Allardyce spoke about his former club and Dyche’s task.
“If he gets Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the right frame of mind and fit enough to stop worrying about his injuries psychologically. That’s his problem now, psychologically. Physically he’s probably fine, but he’s been injured for that long with so many injuries,” Allardyce said.
“He keeps getting these niggles, it puts doubt in your mind. Do you run as freely as you used to? No, do you work as hard as you used to? No. Is it on the back of your mind? Yes. You need to overcome your psychological barriers because he’s the main man.”
“If you get Dominic scoring, one point will turn into three and that will get them out of trouble.”
He’s the one
Allardyce isn’t wrong, if Everton are to get themselves out of this mess, Calvert-Lewin will be the one to drag them to glory.
The Toffees’ defence will be fine. Sean Dyche knows how to get a team organised, and earlier this season under Frank Lampard, Everton were keeping plenty of clean sheets.
Putting the ball in the net is the problem, and that’s an issue that Calvert-Lewin can solve when he’s at his best.
If Dyche gets Calvert-Lewin firing, Everton will quickly move up the table.
