Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson has been ruled out with a knee injury.
Everton manager Sam Allardyce has told the Liverpool Echo that he is hopeful Gylfi Sigurdsson can feature for the Toffees once again before the end of the season.
The 28-year-old is due to see a specialist this week in order to assess the damage after picking up what initially seems to be a long-term knee problem during the 2-0 win over Brighton last month.
It had been feared that Sigurdsson was set to miss the rest of the season and even some of Iceland’s World Cup campaign in Russia this summer, but Allardyce remains optimistic that the set-piece specialist can return sooner than expected.
The former England manager refused to put a timescale on the former Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City star’s injury, but is hopeful of a return to action with six league games still to be played.
“We hope Gylfi will figure,” Allardyce said, when asked if Sigurdsson will return to action before the end of the season.
Despite a difficult start to life on Merseyside following his £45million move from Swansea City in the summer, Sigurdsson has still managed to have a hand in 11 goals in all competitions – scoring six and providing five.
However, his absence will be surely be felt by the Toffees between now and the end of the season, with bitter rivals Liverpool next up for the Toffees on Saturday at Goodison Park.
