Newcastle have finally announced the arrival of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon. He has penned a contract until the summer of 2026, prompting a six-word reaction from Allan Saint-Maximin on Instagram.

Bruno, 24, joins Newcastle as the club’s third January signing and it is believed that the club could even add two or three more before Monday’s deadline at 11pm. It solves the need for a ball-playing midfielder.

The Brazilian has sparkled in France with Lyon since his move from Atletico Paranense in January 2020. He has clocked up 71 appearances for Lyon, earning praise from Houssem Aouar – who said he is “in love”.

Newcastle announced their third arrival on Sunday afternoon, with 90Min reporting that the total could reach a huge £43million. It is believed a fee of £35million has been paid to Lyon up top – with £8million in add-ons.

Newcastle are expected to bring in a central defender before the end of the window. A bid has been accepted for Brighton’s Dan Burn, worth £13million. Another centre-back could also arrive before the deadline.

The Toon do have numbers in the middle of the park – the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick. But a lack of quality was also identified and Bruno has been brought in.

Saint-Maximin, who played in French football for Lyon’s rivals Nice before joining Newcastle, gave an instant six-word reaction on Instagram.
