Allan McGregor made a terrific save to deny Christophe Berra as Rangers beat Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts 3-0 at Ibrox.
It is not often a goalkeeper gets grabs the spotlight after his side win 3-0. But the role Allan McGregor played in Rangers’ comfortable win against Hearts on Wednesday night provided the platform for an excellent result which snaps a five-game without without success for steven Gerrard’s side.
After Sunday’s dramatic Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic, in which James Forrest’s late strike appeared to bring an end to any lingering hopes of the Scottish Premiership title, Rangers got back to winning ways in front of their own supporters.
Goals from Jermain Defoe, Connor Goldson and Scott Arfield sealed an impressive victory against a Hearts side who managed eight shots themselves without finding the back of the net.
That was thanks in part to an impressive performance from Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor, who once again rolled back the years with a virtuoso display between the sticks – not for the first time this season.
The 36-year-old made one stand-out stop to tip a thumping Christophe Berra header over the crossbar and Levein highlighted that as a key moment in the game with Rangers only two goals up at the time.
It was a fabulous piece of reflexes which make a mockery of the fact that McGregor is closer to 40 than 30 these days. The veteran has been the stand-out goalkeeper in Scotland this season bar none and his performance against Hearts only reinforced the idea that the very best shot-stoppers remain switched on and focused even when their side are dominating at the other end.
McGregor has often stepped up to the plate when required since returning to Rangers from Hull City last summer and his terrific stop to deny Berra was another example of his enduring reliability.
