Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been comparing Aleksandar Mitrovic and Harry Kane’s playstyles.

The Serbian striker made headlines this weekend after netting a brace against Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season, and he scored his two goals with some real traditional number nine play.

A back-post header and a penalty are bread and butter for a player like Mitrovic, and Seaman absolutely loved what he saw.

Seaman enjoyed watching a player embrace the role of an old-fashioned number nine, stating that he’s not a fan of the modern-day phenomena of strikers dropping deep to collect the ball – namedropping Harry Kane in the process.

What’s been said?

Seaman spoke about Mitrovic and Kane.

“I wasn’t surprised to see Mitrovic scoring. He has the knack of being in the box, he doesn’t link-up play too much, he’s always waiting in and around the box and that’s what you want your striker to be doing. I have this gripe with Harry Kane how he drops way too deep all the time. I watched a clip the other day where they’d scored their goal and I thought ‘has Kane been brought off?’ Then all of a sudden he came into shot because he’d been so deep,” Seaman said.

More than one way to skin a cat

Playing as a number nine spearheading the attack has long been the main way to be an effective striker, especially in English football, but these days, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

We completely understand where Seaman is coming from, it can be frustrating watching Kane play more like a defensive midfielder than a striker at times, but his numbers speak for themselves.

Even in this withdrawn role, the Spurs star is one of the deadliest goalscorers in Europe, and if it’s helping the team, that’s all that matters.

Kane’s style of play isn’t to everyone’s taste, but it works well for Spurs and that’s what matters.
