Zenit St Petersburg have confirmed the departure of Branislav Ivanovic amid suggestions that a reunion with Carlo Ancelotti could be on the cards at Everton.
Even at 36, one of the most successful defenders of the modern era continues to add to his enviable collection of silverware.
Lifting the Russian Premiership trophy high into the St Petersburg sky, Ivanovic celebrated the 14th trophy of his storied club career this month.
According to reports from Serbian publication Novosti, the 105-cap veteran could now be set for a shock return to a country where he celebrated three league titles in the blue of Chelsea – not that Ivanovic is likely to sample the sweet taste of silver at Goodison Park.
The rampaging right-back turned commanding centre-half is reportedly in talks with Everton, in a deal which would see him link up with former Stamford Bridge boss Ancelotti on Merseyside.
And, 24 hours after those eye-catching reports emerged, Zenit have now bid an emotional farewell to their title-winning captain.
“We thank Branislav for his enormous contribution and wish him all the best for the future,” reads a statement on the club’s official website.

Limping to a 12th place finish in the Premier League, their lowest standing in 16 years, Everton continue to look like a side devoid of any character or hunger despite the presence of a legendary, three-time Champions League winner on the Goodison Park touchline.
If there are two attributes you cannot accuse Ivanovic of lacking, however, it is character and hunger.
He might be well past his best but the impact Ivanovic could make on and off the pitch at a callow, cowering Everton team should not be underestimated.
