Chris Wilder won’t be out of work for long.
Unless, of course, the departing Sheffield United boss goes down the Pep Guardiola route and spends the next 12 months pitting his wits against chess grand-masters while marvelling at the New York skyline – and that doesn’t seem like Wilder’s style to us.
The 53-year-old may be walking away Bramall Lane with a heavy heart – the Blades are nailed to the bottom of the Premier League table and hurtling towards the Championship – but even a disastrous 2020/21 season has not taken the shine off his glittering reputation.
Lest we forget that Sheffield United were a third-tier club when Wilder took over at Bramall Lane in 2016.
Four years later, they were pushing for Europe while leaving Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea (who they thrashed 3-0 in their Steel City home) red-faced and nursing a bloody nose.
With one of Britain’s biggest clubs looking for a man capable of rejuvenating a team that has lost its way, who better than a man whose name is synonymous with success, tasting glory wherever he’s laid his hat?

In the eyes of one grateful Sheffield United supporter, Celtic ‘would be mad’ not to at least consider handing the keys to one of Britain’s finest coaches.
Don’t let the tracksuit fool you – this is a man with a mind sharper than Roy Keane’s tongue. And, after leading Oxford and Northampton to promotion before embarking on a remarkable journey with his hometown club, few deserve a chance at the very top level more than Wilder.
