According to TeamTalk, Leeds United are interested in Josh Cullen after an impressive season for Anderlecht.

The midfielder has been shining out in Belgium, but, to be honest, his talents have been there for all to see for quite some time now.

Indeed, two seasons ago, Cullen was shining out on loan at Charlton Athletic, and he impressed a Leeds legend during his time at The Valley, catching the eye of then-manager Lee Bowyer.

What’s been said?

Bowyer was full of praise for Cullen, claiming that the young midfielder was even better than he was at that age.

“He’s better than I was [at that age]. He’s a good player and I think you saw that at Southend, his first game. I think he did well but I know he’s going to do better,” Bowyer said.

“I was delighted [to sign him] because he was someone that we had to bide our time with. I know what qualities he brings to the squad.

“He’s got to the play-off final with Bradford, I know he’s got the experience and he’s a young lad that can play football and gets into the box. He’s an all-round midfielder.

“He’s someone we thought there was an outside chance of coming here but there was a chance of him going to the Championship, we knew that as he was at Bolton last season. He’s here now and he’s improved our squad.”

Better than Bowyer

The fact that Bowyer thinks that Cullen is better than he was as a youngster bodes very well for Leeds.

Every Leeds fan of a certain age knows just how good Bowyer was in his youth, and he only improved from that point on.

Indeed, he was the Whites’ star player in their historic Champions League run in 2001, and if Cullen can become even half as good as that, he will be a very good footballer.

Whether or not he follows in Bowyer’s footsteps and joins Leeds remains to be seen.
