Steve McManaman has hit out at Jose Mourinho’s ‘terrible’ style of play during Premier League Productions live coverage of Tottenham’s defeat to Leicester on Sunday.
He also claimed that Spurs summer signing Sergio Reguilon would be ‘running forward’ in a Real Madrid shirt, but instead, his thought process in North London is to ‘get back’.
A lot was made of Tottenham’s defeat to Leicester at the weekend, mainly because of how they played and it was their second defeat within a matter of days.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder, McManaman, questioned whether the Spurs players are happy playing in this defensive manner.
“If that was the white of a Real Madrid shirt he [Reguilon] would be running forward,” said McManaman. “He’s all of a sudden in the white of a Tottenham shirt and his principle thought is get back, get back.
“If we are talking about Tottenham threatening to win the league, going into second place, this performance is just terrible. It’s terrible.
“If they are going to try and keep their players happy they have to go forward. It’s so negative. Backwards. Backwards. Every thought is backwards – if you are a Tottenham fan at home watching this. Are you happy with the way they play?”

Pundits and the media alike are seemingly on a hunt to criticise everything that’s not near-on perfect.
The highly-regarded Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds gets criticised for his gung-ho and forward-thinking approach, whilst the trophy-laden Mourinho gets stones thrown at him for being too defensive.
From Mourinho’s point of view, all he needs to do is show his medals to those critics, and whilst Spurs didn’t play well on Sunday, they have been playing winning football for large parts of this season.
