‘All I can say’: £70k-a-week star reacts to transfer rumours he’s hearing from Newcastle fans

Jonjo Shelvey has moved to urge Newcastle United fans to be realistic when it comes to transfer target.

Six days ago, Saudi Public Investment Fund completed their takeover at St James’s Park.

And with a fortune of £320 billion, understandably Newcastle supporters are desperate to see big-name players arrive in the North East.

The speculation has already started amid reports that the Magpies have identified Paris Saint-Germain hitman Mauro Icardi as a potential target.

But even he isn’t a big enough player for a lot of Newcastle fans, many of whom are looking at the top tier of talent.

And although Shelvey claims that expectations need to be realistic for now, the Newcastle midfielder, who earns £70,000 per week at the club, says that the ‘sky’s the limit’ long term.

He told The Daily Mail: “I understand what the fans want – they want Mbappe and Messi. All I can say is, that won’t come overnight, we have to be realistic. I understand you can’t go spending so much straight away, and it will be a long process, but it’s one that this club and the fans deserve. This club can achieve anything it wants now, the sky is the limit.”

Measured

This is a measured assessment from Shelvey – and he’s right.

Newcastle fans waited 14 years to see the back of Mike Ashley and they’re going to have to wait a few more before this project really gathers momentum.

But as Shelvey said, the sky really is the limit and providing the club’s custodians go about things in a sensible and controlled way, there’s just no telling what – and who – could happen at St James’s Park.
