Shaun Wright-Phillips has lauded the performance of Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto, who he felt was a problem ‘all game’ for Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday.

The former England forward added that Gnonto was a ‘thorn’ for Forest defender Neco Williams throughout the match, as he told Premier League Productions.

For a number of weeks now, the Italy International has been one of his side’s better players, without the end result showing for it.

That was proven once again at the City Ground, with Leeds’ early dominance resulting in no goals, but instead, a brilliant first-time finish from Brennan Johnson, who scored the only goal of the game.

There is a lot of negative noise around Leeds and manager Jesse Marsch, at the moment, but Wright-Phillips shed a positive light on their young kid on the flanks.

“This is just great from Gnonto,” said Wright-Phillips. “He has been a thorn in Neco’s side all game.

“He just reads that there and Williams tries to header it out, but dropped it short and he pulls it around him. It was another great save from Navas.”

GNONTO COOKING FOR LEEDS

Still in his teenage years, Gnonto is showing serious promise in Yorkshire and what a find the 19-year-old has been for the Premier League club.

Back in the summer, the Whites purchased the all-action forward for under £4 million (Daily Mail) from FC Zurich.

That’s a serious find by the club because they haven’t plucked him out from a big pond.

Plus, given that Gnonto replaced Dan James, then it’s a big upgrade on the Wales international, who is now struggling at Fulham.
