Should Tottenham have let go of Fernando Llorente so easily?

Fernando Llorente is the toast of Naples after helping his new club to a Champions League win.

Tottenham fans were amused and cheered to see Llorente score Napoli’s second goal and beat Liverpool, capitalising on a Virgil van Dijk mistake.

But was it actually good to see from Tottenham’s perspective?

After all, Llorente was a player they could have had on their books still, had they given him a more attractive contract.

Instead Spurs let his deal wind down and leave for free.

The Evening Standard reported in July that Spurs were still open to bringing him back, if common ground could be struck on wages.

Weeks later, Llorente signed with Napoli, and in two substitute appearances the Spaniard has one goal and one assist.

Llorente is a limited player, but he was a really effective back-up striker.

Tottenham’s actions with regard to Llorente would have been more acceptable had they replaced him.

Instead they are gambling that teenager Troy Parrott can step up. He may be able to, but did it have to be either or?

Spurs have taken a gamble, and Llorente’s early contribution shows he has plenty to offer. Tottenham would not have made the final of the Champions League last season without him.
