Liverpool star Roberto Firmino has given an update on his injury ahead of the Reds’ facing Leicester City on Friday night. But the Brazilian delivered some bad news for Jurgen Klopp.

Firmino sat out the Anfield outfit’s return to Premier League duty at Aston Villa on Monday with a calf injury. The 31-year-old picked up an issue when kicked in training last week and also had to miss the Merseyside natives’ 3-2 defeat at Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Stefan Bajcetic delivered for Klopp to pip Aston Villa in Liverpool’s first top-flight game following the World Cup. Firmino had scored his ninth goal in 21 games in all competitions in their last game before Qatar 2022 against Southampton.

Liverpool will now hope to maintain their strong Premier League run when Leicester travel to Anfield on Friday. Klopp’s side have won their last three top-flight fixtures for their best run so far this season. They have only gone unbeaten through four fixtures once this term.

But Klopp will have to take on Leicester without Firmino after the Liverpool striker gave an update on his injury. The Reds’ £29m forward has told talkSPORT that while he has already recovered from his calf issue, he will not resume training until this Thursday at the earliest.

Firmino offers Klopp a disappointing injury update ahead of Liverpool vs Leicester

So, Firmino expects to miss Liverpool’s match with Leicester but noted in his update on his injury that he aims to be back to face Brentford. The Reds travel to the Gtech Community Stadium come January 2. The Bees are also in action this Friday away to West Ham United.

“I’m already healed, thank God,” he stated. “I’ll probably train tomorrow [Thursday]. Then, all being well, I’ll be ready not for the next game but the one after that. So, all great.”

Klopp would no doubt have wanted to have Firmino available as Liverpool met Aston Villa and now face Leicester. The forward started each of their last five Premier League fixtures ahead of the World Cup. But the Brazilian now has a real challenge to get back in the team.

Liverpool have confirmed that Cody Gakpo will join them from PSV Eindhoven on January 1 after finalising his transfer. The Netherlands star will now likely push Firmino down Klopp’s pecking order at Anfield once his £37m, rising up to £50m, transfer is officially registered.
