Graeme Souness has raved about Aston Villa midfielder and reported Newcastle United target John McGinn in The Times.

The former Newcastle manager rates his Scottish compatriot a lot and has spoken highly of his attributes.

According to The Daily Star, current Newcastle boss Steve Bruce wants to sign McGinn for the Magpies this summer.

Bruce worked with the 25-year-old Scotland international during his managerial spell at Villa.

Souness wrote in The Times: “Before his injury, he’d adapted to the Premier League and showed he could handle it.

“The spotlight has been on Jack Grealish, but my concern is that he takes too many touches and that’s why he’s the most tackled player in the top flight.

“McGinn is all-action, aggressive, puts his foot in and is good on the ball. I like him a lot.”

Stats

McGinn has made 18 appearances in the Premier League for Villa so far this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

During the 2018-19 campaign, the Scotland international made 42 starts and one substitute appearance in the Championship for the Villans, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

Good signing for Newcastle United?

McGinn is a very good midfielder who is dynamic and works hard, and with Bruce having worked with him at Villa, he would be a good signing for Newcastle, as the manager would know fully well what he can and cannot do.

The 25-year-old would make the Magpies a better and more dynamic team in the middle of the park, and if Villa get relegated to the Championship, then he could become available.
