Alistair Johnston says Celtic have a player that ‘goes under the radar’ technically

Alistair Johnston has claimed in a video posted on Celtic’s Instagram page that midfielder Reo Hatate goes “under the radar” with his technical ability – but says that it is undeniable that the most-skillful player in Celtic’s side is Jota.

Joining Celtic just over a year ago, 25-year-old Hatate has been in stunning form for the Scottish champions. Clocking up 51 games for the Bhoys, he has clocked up 19 goal involvements – eight goals, 11 assists. He is a Celtic mainstay.

A bargain, then, at just £1.4million. A sentiment shared by Michael Stewart, who could not believe that he cost such a tiny fee back in January 2022 – just a couple of weeks after he joined. He got another assist on Wednesday night.

His neat turn and pass found Greg Taylor, who lashed in a left-footed effort to set Celtic on their way to a 3-0 win over St. Johnstone. Johnstone was filmed answering questions about his teammates and raved about Hatate – and Jota.

“The most skillful player on our team is Jota, it is hard to go against the Portuguese sensation. A little shoutout to Reo, he goes under the radar with how technical he is. His first touch is so clean, with everything he does,” Johnston said.

Hatate is a top player. He has proved to be a serious addition at Celtic, forming a superb partnership in midfield with the likes of Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley in a three-man midfield. His energy, his technique are massive positives.

Many of the Celtic players continue to be linked with a move to the Premier League. Recently, Liel Abada, O’Riley, Kyogo and others have been suggested as possible exits down south. Josip Juranovic too, before his move to Union.

But Hatate will certainly be earning admirers. If Celtic’s Japanese midfielder does earn a move, say in the summer, there is no doubt that he will earn Celtic a profit. Bought for just £1.4million, you would say he could be worth 10 times that.
