If Jermain Defoe had done more in recent weeks, Alfredo Morelos would not have been starting in the first place.

Alfredo Morelos let Rangers down as they fell to defeat against rivals Celtic.
Morelos was red carded in the first half after reacting to provocation from Scott Brown.
It was all fairly predictable, and manager Steven Gerrard knew it was a possibility.
So why didn’t Gerrard start January signing Jermain Defoe instead?
After all, these were the big games Defoe was brought in for. Surely his experience would be essential?
Even despite Defoe staying home the last fortnight and Morelos being on international duty with Colombia, the South American got the nod.
It was a fateful decision.

Morelos’ goal record explained why Gerrard went with him.
And Defoe’s also explains why he was left out.
Over the first two months of his spell in Glasgow, Defoe has not done enough.
If he had been more convincing, he would have been a starter yesterday, and saved Gerrard picking the risky Morelos.
As it was, Defoe is currently seen as second choice, despite the downside Morelos brings.
He needs to step up between now and the end of the season.
