Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos was sent off in the Ibrox side’s latest win.
Alfredo Morelos has dominated most of the headlines following Rangers’ impressive win on Wednesday, with the striker displaying the best and worst aspects of his game at Pittodrie.
Morelos was superb while he was on the pitch. The striker gave Aberdeen’s defenders all sorts of problems, and displayed all of his quality to score both of Rangers’ first two goals in the 4-2 victory.
The first demonstrated the Colombian’s poacher’s instinct as he peeled off towards the back post, and was rewarded with a fairly simple chance after Ryan Kent’s initial effort was parried his way.
The second goal was pure class from the 22-year-old as he guided the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, when he seemed to have potentially better options available to him.
But his night ended prematurely after a clash with Scott McKenna that led to both players being sent off. Neither player seemed to make a lot of contact with the other, but both will probably regret their part in the incident.
Had the game not ended in a Rangers win, and had the Gers not signed Jermain Defoe in January, it is possible that Morelos would come in for a lot more criticism than he is currently receiving from the Ibrox faithful. He clearly has so much talent and was outstanding on Wednesday, but he has now collected four red cards this season and does not always help himself.
But perhaps one of the reasons why Gerrard should not be too disappointed about Morelos’ disciplinary issues however, is that it is probably helping Rangers keep hold of the forward.
Morelos has been linked with a move away on a fairly regular basis since arriving at Ibrox. The Daily Record reported last month that Nice were planning an £8 million bid after Chinese Super League club Beijing Renhe had previously made a similar offer.
With a record as good as Morelos’ – he has scored 41 goals in 81 games in all competitions for the Gers, including 23 this season – clubs should be queuing up with offers worth much more than £8 million.
But perhaps, some are being put off by his temperament. Some clubs may feel that targeting spending an eight-figure fee on Morelos has to be considered a gamble.
Morelos may frustrate the supporters with his moments of madness. But given how good he is in front of goal, perhaps the fans should be somewhat pleased that he is so volatile at times, as that may actually improve Rangers’ chances of keeping him for longer.
