Martyn Waghorn has scored goals for fun since swapping Rangers for Ipswich Town in the summer.

Martyn Waghorn wasn’t exactly universally popular among Rangers supporters.
Even the most anti-Waghorn fanatic could appreciate the attacker’s work rate and productivity in the final third, however. In two seasons with the Ibrox giants, the 27-year-old scored 44 goals in 78 games in all competitions, a ratio better than one-in-two.
And it was his tally of 20 in 25 Scottish Championship games that spearheaded Rangers’ return to the top flight after four years away. Yet, with Pedro Caixinha bringing in his own people at Ibrox, Waghorn quickly became surplus to requirements and was shepherded out of Glasgow this summer.

And he has wasted no time showing Rangers what they are missing. Since joining Ipswich Town for a fee far less than the mooted £1 million price-tag, according to manager Mick McCarthy anyway in the Daily Record, the former Sunderland youngster has been in the form of his life.
Waghorn has scored six goals in six Championship starts to help Ipswich Town, one of the sides tipped to struggle at the start of the season, push into the top six. Only Bobby Reid, Jarrod Bowen and Gary Hooper, on seven apiece, have scored more than Waghorn in the second tier so far.
Fortunately, Caixinha’s blushes have been spared somewhat by the inspired addition of Alfredo Morelos from Finnish football. The Colombian youth star cost just £1 million from HJK Helsinki (Daily Record) but has already repaid Rangers’ investment with interest.

Morelos has netted eight in 12 already and looks set to comfortably cruise past Waghorn’s tally of 16 in all competitions last season.
If the 20-year-old had not hit the ground running, however, perhaps a few more supporters would be questioning the wisdom of getting rid of Waghorn.
