Ian Darke has backed Alexis Mac Allister to win the Player of the Season for the 23/24 Premier League campaign after his transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion to Liverpool.

The popular football commentator thinks Alexis Mac Allister is a ‘really fine player’ as he spoke glowing about Liverpool securing his talents this summer.

It has been suggested that Liverpool paid the Seagulls ‘£35 million’ for his midfield talents, as Darke added that he is going to have a ‘big effect’ on Jurgen Klopp’s side next season, as he told ESPN.

Unless a host of new names walk through the Anfield gates, and fans are still expecting more signings, then Mac Allister’s arrival should see him walk straight into the XI.

At the end of the day, no-one in that midfield can hold their head up high after their performances last season. It could be argued that Trent Alexander-Arnold, towards the end of the season, was their best midfield player after he started playing a hybrid role.

Nonetheless, Mac Allister has arrived to tune things up and Darke, albeit a very early prediction, has gone ‘left-field’ with his call on the 2022 World Cup-winning star.

“I like Alexis Mac Allister,” said Darke. “He can really pick a pass. I think he is a really fine player.

“It’s a left-field pick to start a bit of summer debate which is what we are about (on Mac Allister being POTY). I could see him having a big effect really at Liverpool. I think he will fit in very, very nicely there.”

Mac Allister is going to cook under Klopp

This is a prime example of a player going to the next level and picking the right manager and system that will suit his game.

More than likely, Klopp will deploy him as a number eight, where he will provide energy, aggression, the ability to get that ball forward early and some goals from midfield.

Mac Allister is outstanding from set-piece situations, but with a certain Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah already at the club, then he might have to get in line.
