Alexander Zverev fell short against Jannik Sinner at the Vienna Open, even after taking the first set against the Italian.

Despite Zverev’s pre-match praise for Sinner, he quickly took a one-set lead against the world No. 2.

Sinner responded well, turning things around to win the next two sets and continue his impressive run of form on indoor hard courts. The win also marked his second Vienna Open title.

Following the match, Zverev had a message for the Italian after suffering his fourth defeat to him.

Zverev showed his class following the defeat, just as he did after losing to Sinner at this year’s Australian Open.

“I’d like to congratulate Jannik, whose level has been off the charts these last two years. Currently for me you’re the best player in the world.”

He went on to say: “What an amazing year. 4 Grand Slam finals and 2 Grand Slam titles. This week of course, simply the best player here in Vienna. To your team, of course, very well done.

“The last couple of years have been amazing. You continue improving. I know Jannik is the biggest part of it, but you guys have such a big part in it as well.

“The improvement you guys made is amazing to see. Well done and good luck.”

Zverev has now lost three straight matches to Sinner. His most recent win over him came at the 2023 US Open.

Alexander Zverev’s results in finals this season

Zverev has reached four finals so far in 2025, but his record has not been great, coming away with just one title from those appearances.

His only win of the year came at the Bavarian Championships in April, where he beat Ben Shelton on clay.

The German has also finished as runner-up to Sinner at both the Australian Open and Vienna Open, with another loss coming at the Stuttgart Open.
