Nowhere in Europe comes close to the amount of money flowing through the Premier League, a division that rakes in billions each year.

Clubs haven’t shied away from spending either. Across the 2010s and 2020s, teams have invested heavily in new signings, hoping to add quality to their squads.

However, not every high-profile transfer has gone as planned. Some big-money moves have ended up being labelled as clear flops.

Others, though, managed to live up to the price tag and went on to become iconic figures in the league’s history.

Here’s a look at where those deals rank among the highest-priced transfers ever made in English football history.

Antony

Manchester United paid a hefty sum to bring Antony back under Erik ten Hag in September 2022, but the move has since been widely criticised as one of the league’s biggest missteps.

The Brazilian managed only five goals in 62 league appearances before moving to Real Betis on loan in January 2025.

Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea spent big in January 2023 to bring Ukrainian talent Mykhailo Mudryk to Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, the move hasn’t panned out as hoped so far.

Mudryk – who was also a target for Arsenal – managed just five goals in 53 league appearances before being suspended following a failed doping test and remains out of action.

Pogba’s Manchester United return

Once again, Manchester United finds themselves on this list. The club broke the world transfer record to bring Paul Pogba back from Juventus in August 2016, four years after he had left Old Trafford for Turin on a free transfer.

He later made the same move back to Juventus, once again leaving Manchester United without a fee in July 2022.

Romelu Lukaku

This deal is right up there with Manchester United’s move for Antony as one of the most disappointing in recent memory.

Chelsea spent a club-record fee to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge in August 2021, but the move quickly soured after a controversial interview where he criticised Thomas Tuchel just months into his five-year deal.

In the end, Chelsea had to cut their losses, selling the striker to Napoli for just £30m in August 2024.

Jack Grealish

Manchester City broke their transfer record in 2021 to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £100m, after he had an impressive season.

While Grealish played a part in City’s 2022/23 treble-winning season, his overall impact has been limited, with just 17 goals in 157 appearances.

The club are now open to offers for the England international, who has not been able to replicate his earlier form and is no longer a regular starter.

Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer emerged as one of the Premier League’s top talents after joining Chelsea from Manchester City for £42.5m. The deal could rise to £47.5m with add-ons.

He quickly made an impact at Stamford Bridge, scoring over 40 goals in his first two seasons and showing that he can handle a central role in attack.

Declan Rice

West Ham’s Conference League title in 2023, led by Declan Rice, was the catalyst for Arsenal’s record-breaking £105m transfer of the England midfielder.

The man from Kingston-upon-Thames has made a huge impact for the Gunners, scoring ten goals in 66 Premier League appearances while also playing a big role in their Champions League win over Barcelona last year.

Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea have spent over £1bn since Todd Boehly took over from Roman Abramovich in May 2022, and £106.8m of that went towards bringing Enzo Fernandez in from Benfica.

The Blues simply could not bring themselves to miss out on the South American after he helped fire Argentina to FIFA World Cup glory in December 2022.

Moises Caicedo

Chelsea moved quickly to add another high-priced midfielder after bringing in Fernandez, this time setting a new British transfer record to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

Liverpool had also shown strong interest, but the Ecuadorian midfielder was only ever focused on joining Stamford Bridge.

Florian Wirtz

Wirtz briefly held the title of the Premier League’s most expensive signing during the summer 2025 transfer window.

The move also made him the most expensive German player ever, following his £116m transfer to Anfield.

Alexander Isak

During the 2025 window, Liverpool broke the transfer record twice, including their move for Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
