Trent Alexander-Arnold has told TalkSPORT that training against Sadio Mane was not a “nice feeling” at Liverpool last season, describing the Bayern Munich star as one of the best in the world in terms of left wingers – if not, the best.

England and Alexander-Arnold take on Senegal on Sunday in the last 16 of the World Cup. But they will be helped with Senegal missing their talisman, who suffered an injury while playing for Bayern – just weeks before the trip to Qatar.

Of course, Liverpool fans were heartbroken when Mane was sold by the Merseyside club to Bayern. With his contract set to expire at the end of this season – Mane had the choice; sign a new deal like Mo Salah, or leave the club.

He chose the latter. Since joining Bayern, he has been excellent – having a hand in 15 goals during 23 appearances. Alexander-Arnold was discussing Sunday’s game and was asked about the missing Mane – and he had high praise.

“He is a world-class player. As bad it sounds, it helps us that we’re not playing against him. I only say that out of pure respect for him. I say that because I’ve played against him in training. It is not a nice feeling,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“He is one of, if not the best left-winger in the world. He can win games by himself – I’ve seen it on multiple occasions, and I’ve benefited from it. I was gutted he missed out on this tournament and I’ve got a really good relationship with.”

Alexander-Arnold: Training against Mane at Liverpool not nice

Has Liverpool’s poor form been down to the exit of Mane? No, not solely but of course, it has not helped. Liverpool do not look as defensively strong, and as fearsome as they have done in recent seasons. Mane was a big part of that.

But part of it is also down to injuries, and a lengthy injury list. Their squad is getting older, too. Does Mane’s absence help England? Without a doubt. The Three Lions will be facing a tough test, but their tests will be easier without Mane.
