Trent Alexander-Arnold has now explained what Liverpool are ‘going to have to’ do to stun Real Madrid. The Reds visit Los Blancos trailing 5-2 in their Champions League last 16 tie.

The Anfield natives had stormed into a two-goal lead during the first leg of their knockout stage affair. But the Galacticos responded to early goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah with Vinicius Jr, Eder Militao and Karim Benzema each finding the net on Merseyside.

Liverpool must now travel to the Santiago Bernabeu this Wednesday and complete one of the greatest Champions League comebacks ever. Jurgen Klopp’s side must win the second leg by four or more clear goals in normal or extra time to claim a spot in the quarter-finals.

Klopp has led Liverpool to the quarter-finals in four of their last five terms. Only in 2019/20 have the Reds failed to advance beyond the Round of 16 over that spell. They also reached the final in 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2021/22. But they only took the UEFA crown in 2018/19.

Real Madrid also edged Liverpool to win a record 14th UEFA cup last season with a 1-0 win in May. Vinicius Jr scored the only goal at the Stade de France and was the architect of the Reds’ downfall at Anfield. But Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool are still in the meeting.

Alexander-Arnold believes a near-perfect Liverpool can beat Real Madrid to advance

Alexander-Arnold believes that a near-perfect performance from Liverpool can see Klopp’s squad beat Real Madrid and reach the quarter-finals. The right-back is confident that they have the attacking arsenal to cause Carlo Ancelotti’s squad difficulties and will not give up.

“We will go there to win the game, to try and get through,” Alexander-Arnold has now told the Liverpool Echo. “We’re not just going to go there and think that it’s already done and we’re out. We still believe.

“We know it is going to be very difficult. But we know we’re capable of scoring goals in games and we’re going to have to have a near-perfect game to go through to the next round. But we never say never.”

Liverpool have scored four or more goals in one single match on three occasions so far this term. They have beaten AFC Bournemouth 9-0, Rangers 7-1 and Manchester United 7-0 in all competitions. Mohamed Salah is also their top scorer this term on 22 goals in 38 games.
