Nottingham Forest defender Ryan Yates picked up an unwanted first at the weekend. The 19-year-old is currently out on loan at Shrewsbury Town. On Saturday his side lost to Bristol Rovers in League One, in a game in which he saw red.
He picked up two yellow cards in the game and it was a first career red for the teenager, whom Forest have high hopes for.
But he has received support from one of his team-mates today. Shrewsbury winger Alex Rodman believes the red card is indicative of Yates’ winning mentality.

The 30-year-old told the Shropshire Star that he was pleased to see such fight in a young player:
“It’s frustrating but Yatesy is a winner.
“He’s so enthusiastic and he wants to win.
“It’s unfortunate because it’s just inexperience, he’s a young lad, learning the game. It’s unfortunate because it’s at a time when we need everyone on the pitch.
“I wouldn’t ever take that out of Yatesy’s game, it’s just a bit of cleverness. I wouldn’t take away that winning mentality and desperate drive to be in there. It’s just a bit of experience and he’ll learn from that.”
Yates obviously has a fight on his hands to get regular first-team football at the City Ground. The right-back, who can also operate in midfield, will need to convince new Forest boss Mark Warburton in the summer that he should join the likes of Ben Osborn, Joe Worrall, Jordan Smith and Ben Brereton in graduating from the Forest academy and playing in the first-team.
