Ibrox legend Alex Rae believes Rangers and Aberdeen pose a title threat to Celtic.
Rangers legend Alex Rae has told the Daily Record that Graeme Murty’s side can pose a Scottish Premiership title challenge to Celtic despite sitting nine points behind their Old Firm rivals.
Rae’s former side enjoyed an excellent weekend, as they beat Martin Canning’s Hamilton to win 5-3 at New Douglas Park, while leapfrogging Aberdeen who lost to Hibernian and closing the gap from 11 to nine as Celtic drew with St. Johnstone.
It has seen questions arise as to whether Celtic must begin to look over their shoulder with Rangers and Aberdeen now just three wins off of Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Rae, who played for Rangers for two years between 2004 and 2006 after being rejected at academy level, stated that the Gers are beginning to ask questions of the Celtic side as the Hoops maintain a Europa League campaign.
“I felt Celtic would win this title by a minimum of 15 points, and they still might. But things have changed,” Rae said. “Now there is a chance for Rangers and Aberdeen to ask some questions of this Celtic team.
“If Rangers and Aberdeen both win at the weekend then all of a sudden you start to look a couple of weeks down the line and the next Old Firm game. There would then be huge added significance to what is already a massive match.”
“Come Sunday night we could be talking about a title race is something that a lot of people would find refreshing. You define your league by having a challenge at the top.”
Aberdeen play host to Celtic on Sunday afternoon, just three days after Celtic face Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia and that could play into the Dons hands who sit level on points with Rangers.
Murty’s side are expected to earn all three points with a home win against Hearts, which would see the Light Blues earn a seventh win in eight league and cup outings.
